Sex and The City director to turn Irish author's debut novel into a TV series

Irish author Lisa McInerney is set to have her award-winning novel made into a TV series.

The series, based on her debut novel The Glorious Heresies, is set to be directed and executively produced by Julian Farino, whose directorial credits include episodes of Sex and The City.

McInerney will herself adapt the book for the screen.

Mr Farino told the Bookseller magazine: “The Glorious Heresies has a terrific ensemble of original characters, all of whom have compelling journeys, making it ideal for a classy television series.”

“Not only does Lisa write with edge and compassion but her dialogue and sense of rhythm is hugely cinematic. Her material is made for the screen.”

The Galway-born author's debut, which won the Bailey's Women's Prize for Fiction and the Desmond Elliott Prize, is set in post-crash Cork. It centres around a character called Maureen, who shows up after 40 years and threatens the criminal empire her estranged son has built up.

McInerney first gained attention with a blog about working-class Irish life, written under the pen-name Sweary Lady
