Conor McGregor v Floyd Mayweather gate receipts fall well short of record

Conor McGregor's Las Vegas showdown with Floyd Mayweather did not set a new record for gate receipts, despite repeated claims that it would.

The much hyped, money-spinning boxing match - that saw Mayweather beat the Notorious with a 10th round stoppage - had been billed as the fight of the century and was tipped to top Mayweather v Manny Pacquiao in 2015 in terms of ticket revenue.

But there were 5,000 empty seats in the T Mobile Arena to watch Mayweather bow out of the sport with a 50-0 record against Irishman McGregor.

Figures released by the Nevada Commission show that McGregor v Mayweather generated €46.3m, the second highest of all time behind the €60.4m from Mayweather v Pacquiao.

The McGregor bout is, however, expected to surpass the Pacquiao fight in pay-per-views and including sponsorship and merchandise, the fight will be the richest in history with total revenue edging towards €520m.

Following Mayweather's win over McGregor, both fighters and delegates from boxing and MMA stated that gate receipts would be a record high so these figures will come as a blow.
